What else could beat the Singaporean heat than a fun-filled water festival?!?
Myanmar's New Year celebration is definitely a refreshing opportunity to indulge in a new cultural experience!
The word Thingyan means change, and this change marks the Burmese New Year around 13-16 April every year. It is a four-day festival in Myanmar which includes cultural and water splashing activities.
Despite the similarities, it should not be mistaken with Songkran from Thailand, at least definitionwise. Water is the main symbol of both, which believed to wash away one's sins from the past year. And not to forget that it's basically a Buddhist festival, devotees must observe some rituals as well like bathing Buddha images with scented water and paying homage to the elders with offerings.
Those who are traveling to Singapore this time around the year can get a glimpse of the event at the Burmese Buddhist Temple by participating in water fights, enjoy cultural performances and taste Burmese foods!
Water resistant attire is highly recommended, or something comfy ;)!
