Hindu festival commemorates of the event when Shiva saved the world by drinking a pot of poison which could have destroyed the world. The another event had fallen on the same day was the marriage of Shiva and goddess Parvati.
On this night women pray for the well being of their husbands and son, unmarried women pray for a husband like Shiva.
Every 14th darkest night of the month considered as "Sivarathri", but in the month of February or March of Magha is the greatest of all.
The festival fell on the 17th February this year in Singapore, which was a moonless night. Cultural programs were held and started at 6 pm and lasted till the next day of 5 am in the Sri Sivan Temple (Geylang).
The crowd of devotees was extremely huge, some devotees had priority entry by carrying milk pots on their head to bath the Shivalingam.
