Navratri Festival

Navratri the 'nine auspicious nights', is one of the most important Hindu festivals of the year in honour of Goddess Durga's triumph over the demon king Mahishsura. This year in 2015 it's celebrated from 13 to 22 October.

During the 10 days and nine nights, her three main manifestations (Parvathi, Lakshmi and Sarasvati) are worshipped. The first three days are dedicated to Parvathi, the fourth to sixth days to Lakshmi and the last three days to Sarasvati. The tenth day known as the Victory Day or Dussera.

General Navratri customs:

-The festivities may vary from region to region but includes chanting, prayers, fasting, music and dance activities (Garbha or Dandiya).
-Before the first day, people clean their homes like before any other major occasions.
-Devotees place Durga images at their homes and temples to shower them with their prayers and offerings.
-Fasting: consuming satvik foods.
-*Creating Navratri Golu which is like a "museum of idols".
