Festivals in Singapore for January-February 2015



Happy New Year to Everyone for the year 2015!! 


Life and festivals never stop for a second in Lion city. Here is a list of the upcoming events you can observe in January-February. Most of them are Hindu Festivals and the mayor Chinese Lunar New Year for Chinese people. 

Festivals in Singapore for January-February 2015

1.Pongal: harvest festival for Tamil people all around the world  (See: Pongal 2014) 

What to expect: 
  • -4 days festival
  • -festival village with cultural programs
  • -free distribution of the traditional sweet called pongal
2. My favorite is the Thaipusam, a significant festival of the Tamil community in Singapore, which is a huge tourist attraction in Kuala Lumpur, at Batu Caves as well. Last year I was lucky to witness this special event, you can read about it here : Thaipusam 2014

What to expect:
  • -this religious festival is definitely not for the faint-hearted, so be prepared for an "extreme" way of devotion by the active participants
  • -4 km walk with the devotees through Serangoon Road to the Tank Road 
3. Everybody wants to know what the New Year brings to us,  let's hope that the Year of the Goat will bring peace and happiness, health and prosperity to All! (Chinese Lunar New Year 2014)
Shops have already started selling traditional Chinese New Year dresses, decorations and gift hampers.  For cheap CNY goodies visit the Chinatown street market,or any outlet of Daiso and Giant supermarket.

  • -Chinatown in New Year dress
  • -Festival goodies in the street market
  • -Light up ceremony (31.January from 6pm at New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Sen street), the lights will be on till 19.March
  • -Evening shows
  • -CNY delicacies

4. I love to observe Hindu festivals, so last year I visited to the Sri Sivan Temple in Geylang to celebrate Maha Shivaratri, the "great night of Shiva"!

  • Maha Shivaratri: 17.February 2015
  • Chinese New Year: 19. February 2015
