Buddha images and their meaning, postures and mudras

1.Reclining Buddha
The picture below has been taken on Vesak at the Sri Lankaramaya Buddhist Temple, Singapore. Buddha's head is resting on his right palm (which faces north) and it depicts the event when the Buddha was about to enter the state of Death (parinirvana).

On the next picture you can observe, that the right hand is supporting the head which means he is resting.  This statue can be found in the "Bright Hill Temple", Singapore.

  • 2. The next picture below has been taken in the Lian Shan Shuang Lin Monastery, Singapore. These Buddhas are sitting in the so called "Bhumisparsha mudra" posture. The right hand placed upon the right knee in "earth pressing" mudra, the left hand is in the lap  in the Dhyana mudra of meditation facing outwards. They name it as "Calling the Earth to Witness the Truth" posture.

An another nice example on this Bhumisparsha mudra is this large white marble beauty in the main hall of Singapore's Burmese temple.
They say it was Buddha's hand gesture when he achieved enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

  • 3. And here comes my favorite to introduce the "Abhaya mudra", the symbol of peace and "no fear". Tian Tan-Big-Buddha in Hong Kong on Lantau Island. This place is just simply amazing! Right hand is raised at chest level, open palm outward which means to remove affliction, left hand is also facing out and rests on the knee, symbolizes happiness.

  • 4. The next statue is an Amitabha Buddha statue from the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Singapore. It's said that he is the life protector for those who born in the year of the Dog. He is sitting on a lotus flower in meditation pose with the gesture called Dhyana mudra while both hands are in the lap. Symbolizes wisdom.

  1. You were quite lucky to be the neighbour of Reclining Buddha Statues.
The First image you post means Lord Buddha was about to enter the state of Parinirvana or (Death) not Nirvana. Other images are quite amazing.
About the Earth Touching Buddha, it is believed that Lord Buddha entered Nirvana state and Mara of the demon asked lord Buddha to provide witness and in return he touch the earth with his right hand and Earth showed and became the witness to Lord Buddha's attaining Nirvana.
