The oddest thing I have ever seen in my life!! I have been so excited about it not to miss any moment of this event. Earlier I did not know this festival exists at all, but since I am in Singapore, I am trying to be up to date on Hindu and Chinese festivals not to miss anything!
Thaipusam is a Hindu festival, which commemorates Lord Murugan's VICTORY over the evil Soorapadman. His mother, Goddess Parvati presented him the "VEL" (spear) to vanquish the demon.
This festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community.
Devotees worship Murugan by performing "KAVADI ATTAM" (kavadi dance), and the kavadi(burden) is attached to their body with hooks.
They pierce their tongues and cheeks too which reminds them of Murugan. The preparation starts in the Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple from Serangoon Road, then the devotees take a 4 km walk to the Sri Thandayuthapani Temple to Thank Road. The Kavadi itself is about 20 kg. They do not feel pain, because initially 48 days before the day they must prepare themselves with fasting and praying. By the time the kavadi-bearers have to go through the whole process it gets into a trance state, so that is why they do not feel pain at all. During their route someone is always walking in front of the kavadi-bearer to help him/her remain in trance state by singing and playing drum. Women and children also participate on the ceremony by carrying milk pot, adult women similar to the men devotees can also pierce their forehead or cheeks. In Singapore it is not rare that Chinese people can be seen in Hindu temples and active participants on this ceremony also.
